The Royal Society Centenary Lectures are now underway. This year they are being given by Professor John Katzenellenbogen from the University of Illinois at Urbana, U.S.A. The lecture tour started off today, at the Open University in Milton Keynes. The lecture tour includes Nottingham, Leeds, York and Southampton. He will speak at St Andrews University on the 9th of December 2009 the topic is:
Estrogens and Estrogen Receptors: Design, Discovery and Expedited Synthesis of Ligands of Unusual Structure and Activity.
Estrogen receptors play a critical role in breast cancer, his lab are trying to design small molecules that can stick to the estrogen receptor. Hormone receptors also play an important role in prostate cancer. The Katzenellenbogen lab are developing new ways of “seeing” these receptors in people and it is hoped that such studies will allow the better diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It is an interesting topic and promises to cover a wide range of topics of interest to chemists, biologists and clinicians. I’d go if I was a bit nearer St Andrews!
