Well, almost local, researchers at the University of Dundee have been awarded £1 million pounds to help bowel cancer patients “BeWELL”. BeWELL is a project to help overweight people reduce their risk of bowel cancer by improving their diet and increasing their physical activity. Professor Annie Anderson, one of the leaders of the study says that “If we can encourage people to work on those factors we could significantly lessen their chance of suffering from colorectal cancer and other conditions”.
The aim of the research is to see if patients can be helped to keep their own goals for changing their diet, body weight and activity. The research will be carried out with the University of Aberdeen, NHS Tayside and University College, London. The researchers will compare the BeWELL intervention (which includes several appointments with specialists) with standard NHS care.
People who are aged between 50-70 years and have had a pre-cancerous bowel polyp removed and are over weight will be invited to take part in the study. So, this means to take part in the study, you already need to have had an adenoma removed from your bowel. They are hoping that people who can make changes to their diet and lifestyle can reduce their risk of getting bowel cancer. More information is available here.
The research is being funded by the Medical Research Council and is being coordinated by the Centre for Research into Cancer Prevention and Screening (CRiPs) at the University of Dundee.
