This post is aimed at scientists and medics. Aberdeen University run an intensive (week long) course in Applied Epidemiology (click here for the advert) from the 1st-5th of March 2010. These courses have run in Aberdeen since 2007, having previously been offered at the University of Manchester.
What is epidemiology? Why is it interesting? Epidemiology is the study of disease, that can be any disease e.g. cancer, swine flu, diabetes. This course is particularly aimed at people working on musculoskeletal disease (things like arthritis).
It certainly looks like a great (and intense) course, you can see the provisional timetable here. They are covering things like statistics, analysis, different types of trial, bias and cofounding.
What’s the downside? Places are limited to 25 participants and are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. The course costs £950 (yes, you did read that correctly, £950). I am sure it is worth the money and I’d love to go, but sadly I don’t have a spare £950 (!).
Have you had any formal training in epidemiology or did you pick it up “as you went along”?
