The nursing charity “Marie Curie Cancer Care” are running a new series of adverts in September. The adverts encourage you to talk to your GP or district nurse if you are terminally ill (dying) from cancer. Marie Curie nurses usually work with people in their last 3 months of life, although there is no hard and fast rule and from April 2008 have worked with people who have other terminal conditions such as motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis.
The adverts will be in magazines (such as Marie Claire, Reader’s Digest and Easy Living); newspapers (the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Mail etc) and on some radio stations (including Classic FM). Marie Curie provides free nursing care but needs to be accessed through your own GP. If you have recently been diagnosed with cancer hearing reminders that cancer can be terminal can feel like a kick in the teeth, especially when you’re doing everthing to try and stay well. These services help a great number of people and the more people that know about them the better. Many people with cancer WILL be cured of their disease and WILL NOT need the services of a Marie Curie nurse.
Marie Curie provide hands on nursing care in your own home (and shouldn’t be confused with Macmillan nurses, who tend to provide information to people in hospital from when they are first diagnosed).There is more information on Marie Curie Nurses here (you need Acrobat reader to open the file) or you can find out about local services by phoning.
