I thought I’d start with the “Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Biology“. I like Usborne books, the illustrations are usually superb and the science is pretty accurate, if somewhat simplified. According to the website this book is aimed at 11+ years plus. I think this book would suit pupils in Secondary school, probably those at Intermediate level (Standard Grade) in biology. Having said that, if you are an adult who wants to brush up on their biology it is well worth a look (even if you’ve never done any biology before) and it would be useful for revision if you are taking Higher biology.
The book does cover all of biology, so the first 50 pages are devoted to plants, animals, birds ecosystems etc. The remaining 60 or so pages are mostly about human biology. The different “systems” of the body (nervous system, digestive system, heart, blood etc) are well covered and there are a few pages introducing DNA, cells and hereditary.
I like this book because the pictures are intermingled with the text and there are internet links for further information. I have always found biology easier to understand if I have a picture to refer to. Do you have this book? Do you agree with me or not?
