Last week the Scottish Government released statistics on premature death, these focused on coronary heart disease (which includes heart attacks), stroke and cancer. The population of Scotland is about 5 million,the estimated population for 2008 is 5, 168, 500.

In Scotland, 2008 there were:
8,841 deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD).
5,367 deaths from stroke.
14,208 deaths from stroke and CHD combined.
15,269 deaths from cancer

The good news is that in the under 75′s the death rate from cancer decreased 2.1% compared to 2007, overall, since 1995 the cancer death rate in Scotland has fallen by 20%, this means a lot more people are surviving the disease than ever before.
