Will drinking red wine stop you getting cancer?

Wine GlassThere have been a few reports out this week that say drinnking red wine is good for you.  Some newspaper articles are even telling you to sip red wine slowly for a maximum effect.  What did I think of these reports?  Well I’m a bit sceptical.  I checked out the NHS Choices Blog for more information, “Sip red wine for health“.  The reports are based on the fact that red wine contains a chemical called resveratol, that has been shown to make fish (!) live longer. To achieve this effect you would need to drink 60 litres of red wine a day!  Now,  I know that drinking a lot of alcohol is bad for you and I’m not teetotal. But 60 litres a day,  no thanks…

These sort of studies are widely reported in the press and might be one of the reasons that most people think scientists don’t have  clue what they are talking about and so ignore all the advice (see last months post “Scientists keep changing their minds” for more on this topic). Will I continue to drink red wine, yes.  Do I think it is good for me. No.  Does this research matter to me. Not really.  Cheers!
