Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer

I have come across several websites recently that I think deserve a mention.  The first is an American website, I’m too Young for This a website for young adults (15-39 years) with cancer. They are into improving quality of life and setting up support communities aimed specifically at young adults. They have a weekly podcast that you can listen to here.

I was particularly taken with their merchandise, you can get all the usual bags/t-shirts/mugs with slogans like “Stupid Cancer” and “Stupid Chemo“. They have online communities on Facebook, MySpace and Linked in (among others). They point out that childhood cancer cure rates have improved over the past 30 years, so have cure rates for those over 65 years but for those people diagnosed between the ages of 15-39 cure rates have hardly changed. They argue that none of the major cancer charities support research aimed specifically at young adults with cancer.

Another website, based In the UK, is the Teenage Cancer Trust they campaign on behalf of teenagers and young adults with cancer (13 to 24 years). The only specialist teenage cancer trust unit in Scotland is in Glasgow. They are running a conference for teenagers and young adults with cancer in October 2008, at Center Parcs near Nottingham.  If you are looking for some online information aimed at teenagers with cancer (and also based in the UK) check out TiC, Teen Info on Cancer.

There aren’t many groups specific to Scotland aimed directly at Young Adults with cancer. One group that meets in Glasgow is conTAK. They also support a Youth Forum for Young Adults with Cancer in Scotland. If you know of any other good sites, please post below.
