Hello, I am Avril Morrison and I run this website “Understanding Cancer”.  I’m a scientist and I write about cancer research and cancer information on the web.

My aim is to help you sort through the mass of cancer information both in print and on the web to help you find the information you want.  As well as writing this website, I also run courses, usually for small groups of about 5-10 people, who want to know a bit more about cancer, cells, genes and DNA. You don’t need to have taken any biology or medical courses to come along, you just need your curiosity!  If a group course is not your thing, please get in touch, I also offer private one to one tutorials.

Are you looking for cancer information? Where should you start?
  • For a taste of what you’ll learn on one of my courses have a read of my blog, you can find it by clicking on the “News” section at the top of this page.
  • If you are looking for a specific article or information on a specific type of cancer have a look at the “News index” page.
  • If you prefer to get straight to the point and you know what you’re looking for use the “Search” box.

Of course, if you’ve any questions or just want to have a chat about the courses use this form to contact me. Likewise, if there are any topic you’d like me to cover in future posts, please let me know, I’m always open to suggestions.

I guarantee you’ll find my courses modern, up to date and easy to understand. But don’t take my word for it, here is some feedback from previous students:

“I thought the course was very informative. It was great to be able to ask questions throughout”

I also have online courses available that can be accessed at any time, all you need is an email address and a desire to learn!  If you like what you’ve read but you still want more, have a look at my books, sometimes it’s just easier to flick through a book than navigate through a website.

Cancer research shouldn’t be a secret.  Many people believe that science is difficult, complicated and impossible to understand, yet as this book shows, cancer research is going on in labs all over the world every day. There is nothing mysterious about it.
